Who would imagine a cricket club in the City of Poughkeepsie, far away from the Caribbean? But there are a number of West Indians in the city. They have come here over a period of years. Many came here in the 1950s and 60s for IBM. The cricket pitch is right across Cottage Street to the north.
On the north side of the cricket pitch is a rail line. In the 19th century, it carried coal from the Pennsylvania mines back east to factories in New England. However, it is now defunct, and much of the right-of-way acts as a junkyard for metal recycling.
The 3-story residences here on Winnekee are reminiscent of the 3-story homes in many New England mill towns. They have housed the men and women who have worked in the factories and warehouses that were located next to the rail line.
