The Victorian House District is located on the South Side of the City of Poughkeepsie.
Academy Street contains the historic district of 19th century homes directly south of the central business district.
At the far end of the street closest to the city is Christ Episcopal church, built in 1888, which symbolizes the elite nature of the neighborhood.
Garfield Place parallels Academy Street and was also built by the elite in late 19th century. It has kept its elite status for longer, and the homes are bigger than the ones on Academy Street.
Housing is a wonderfully eclectic range of Queen Anne styles. By the late 20th century, many houses considered to be white elephants had been reinhabited and restored with loving care. This is an example of urban recycling; as families are coming back, it is becoming an urban place again.
