Cottage Street, running east-west alongside the rail line, is an interesting example of a warehouse district.

In a typical late 19th century or early 20th century northeastern city, this use of land has been described as a warehouse district or sector.  Sectors tend to follow transportation lines, such as railroads or highways, where accessibility is a key factor in determining land rent. Space near rail lines is important for firms that focus on wholesale distribution or light industrial production.

Across Smith Street to the northwest is EFCO, the Effron Company. EFCO is a wholesaler of bakery supplies and distributes to hundreds of bakeries all over the Mid-Hudson region. This company is a good example of Poughkeepsie as the main distribution center for the entire area between the New York City metropolitan area and the Capitol District of Albany.  This distinct urban function earned the City of Poughkeepsie the nickname of  “The Queen City of the Hudson.”
